"Got it," I saluted weakly and plopped down on a visitor's chair.

"You know, Misato..." I started from afar.

"Do you remember what you told me about the co-pilot, about Rei Ayanami?" a nod of the head. "Here... Well, I decided to get to know her today at least somehow, to find out what kind of person she is — after all, we'll go into battle together soon, I think... And it turns out that she's in my class, and I didn't even know. Well, that's it... I tried to talk to her — maybe she'll tell me something useful about Evangelion piloting... You told me she's been here a long time, so she's probably been training longer and better than me. And, damn, she turned out to be some kind of unsociable person — you can't build any dialogue with her..."

"That's right, it's very similar to her." she couldn't resist and Katsuragi put in. "No, you keep going, Shinji."

"Yeah, well... eer... Well, Rey's too silent, I say... No, I'm not the soul of the company either, well, not that much... I decided to at least walk her home... So!" I said decisively, seeing the merry lights dancing in the girl's eyes again.

"Did you like her?" The captain asked eagerly. "Ha, no wonder! Ray is a good-looking girl, even if she's a little weird..."

"And I didn't like her at all!" I was indignant, although (the infection) I started blushing again. Well, it happens to me, it happens!.. "I didn't even think about it at all — she's my combat comrade!.."

"Nu-nu..." Katsuragi chuckled skeptically, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Yes, yes," I snapped wearily. "And anyway, that's not what we're talking about right now. Tell me, Misato, do you know where Ayanami lives?"

"Well... Somewhere on the outskirts... Although she spends a lot of time in NERV..."

"Have you ever seen this suburb? This is a natural slum! Two thirds of the houses there are unfinished, and the remaining third is almost uninhabited. Garbage, dirt, mess — it feels like the utilities have never looked there since the creation of the world!

"What did you want, Shinji? Tokyo-3 is primarily a fortress city, a military facility. Priority in financing was given to defense and combat systems, while civilian needs were pushed into the background," Katsuragi answered me reasonably. And to be honest, you can see that we even have an overabundance of civilian buildings — people don't really want to live on the battlefield..."

"Well, of course..." I grumbled and immediately caught myself. "Hey, Misato! Don't walk away from the answer!"

"Hmm... well..."

"And without well?"

"I haven't seen where Ray lives," Katsuragi finally confessed. "Technically, she's not under my command, so I'm.."

"Stop," I said, frowning. "How so? Isn't she a pilot?"

"The pilot," Misato nodded. "But a prototype, not a full-fledged Eva. So she is subordinate to the scientific department. I'm not her commander."

"Dr. Akagi?.."

"Yes, Shinji. Ray is listed as a member of the scientific department, so all questions are for Ritsko."

"Questions are questions, but you can do something, right?"

"That is?" The girl raised an eyebrow in surprise.

"Well, you were able to put me up with you..."

"Do you want me to put Ray up with us?" Katsuragi narrowed her eyes cunningly. "Heh..."

"Just don't!.." I quickly cut off the captain's insidious mental constructions. "I'm not asking for anything like that. But to move Ayanami out of this... I'm not even asking for this shack, I'm DEMANDING IT! Vaughn, you said yourself that there are a lot of empty apartments in our house right now. If I remember everything correctly, are they on the balance of the NERVE?"

"Hmm..." judging by Katsuragi's face, she quite caught my thought. "Right. In principle, there is nothing complicated here..."

"That's settled," I summarized, cutting off all escape routes for my commander. "It is advisable to do this immediately. Yes! And let me know when everything is ready."

The girl blinked in surprise, somewhat stunned by my pressure, but then she smiled.

"Yes, Commander Ikari!" The captain saluted playfully, and added in a more normal tone. "You've made me happy, Shinji. I am glad that our pilots take care of each other."

"Well, since there's no one else..." I grumbled, puffing up a bit with pride. A kind word is also pleasant for a cat...

"Is that all, Second Lieutenant Ikari?" fake-formally, Misato finished, leaning back in her chair.

Oh, my! I almost forgot!

"Yes! Here's another thing!.. My classmate Toji Suzuhara's younger sister was injured during the attack on Facility A. She is currently in a city hospital without receiving proper care. I would like to know about the possibility of transferring her to the NERV Infirmary. Well, it's empty now anyway..."

The girl raised an eyebrow.

"Why would you care so much about someone you don't know? Everything is clear with Rey — you still have a lot to do together, but what about this girl? Why do you need it? Just don't think that I'm some kind of callous grymza— I'm just curious..."

"I'm kind..." I muttered, looking away. "Can't you do that? A nerve is a piece of cake, but it will be better for the person..."

"Are you trying to help everyone? I don't think you can do that," Katsuragi spoke seriously. "You can't help everyone, Shinji..."

"I don't care," I waved my hand. "I really can't help everyone, but I can help someone... I'm not the kind of person to just walk by someone else's misfortune. Maybe even to his own detriment. Call me a fool, but I can't do anything else..."

...That's how you stop realizing where the mask you're wearing is and where your true identity is. And it seems that I'm acting within the framework of a fictional image, and at the same time I'm telling the truth. I really can't do anything else-maybe I won't help myself, but I can help other people. Although I rarely act on my own initiative in this matter, but if I am asked, I rarely refuse.

Captain Katsuragi put her hands on the table, interlaced her fingers, and looked at me intently. I couldn't figure out what was more in that look-surprise, approval, or something else.

"All right, Shinji. I'll see what I can do, although I can't promise anything."

"And thanks for that," I nodded.

Silence fell in my commander's office.

"Em... Misato, why was I called? There doesn't seem to be much time for training yet..."

"So there won't be any training today," Katsuragi explained. "Ritsko has some kind of routine computer system diagnostics, so you won't be working on the simulator today..."

"Yeah..." I said vaguely. Is there going to be no training — is that a good thing or a bad thing? On the one hand, it seems to be bad — I don't have much time before a new attack, and I'm poorly prepared, to put it mildly. But on the other hand, today I'm just getting the time I need to buy all the things I need.

"...But if you think you're going to be free as a bird today, you're deeply mistaken", Misato continued sarcastically. "I decided to give you a tactics lesson and analyze your previous fight. So don't relax, I'll deal with yours quickly now... In the meantime, go and wait for me in the tactical training room. You can ask someone on the way where it is."

What an infection! Okay, we need that too... So, let's get up, Vitya, and go look for this very tactical room.

"Understood? Then you're free. But no, wait a minute, Shinji!.."

Well, what else?..

"What?" — I asked, having almost reached the exit.

"A couple of questions," the girl said in an innocent voice. "You sometimes use words that are unfamiliar to me, such as..." She furrowed her brow a little and reproduced as accurately as possible:

"Sсheisse and shalman, right? What does this mean? What language is it in? It doesn't seem to be in English for sure..."

Oops, another one of my mistakes... In my previous life, such questions did not arise — no one was particularly interested in who I was and what I was saying. But here I am under a tight hood... All deviations in my behavior from the intended ones are probably recorded and analyzed in every possible way — suddenly I am not who I pretend to be, or I have some kind of mental disorder...

Okay, stop. I need to explain myself, but how? Ha, I have a legend!

"The first word, Misato, is German. This is, um, a universal swear word, and let me not translate it, so to speak, to avoid it..."

"And the second one is not German?" Katsuragi beat me to it.

Yeah, I nodded. By the way, the captain pronounced the word shalman with a characteristic Japanese accent, that is, replacing the "l" with the "r" — sharman. Well, damn, it's almost like a French move...

"Shalman is in Russian. It means about the same as a pigsty, a mess, or something like that."

"Hmm", Misato rubbed her forehead thoughtfully. "It turns out that you study foreign languages? I didn't even know..."

"Oh, no, really!" I started to get out of it. "I just picked it up from the top..."

"You speak from the top..."

"Yeah, in all sorts of books..."

"Fie, Shinji! You're some kind of nerd — all books, just books..."

"There are different kinds of books, Misato," I raised my finger meaningfully. "There are all kinds of weapons manuals, manuals on guerrilla warfare..."

Katsuragi burst out laughing.

"Oh, right! How could I forget!" The captain managed to laugh. "You're a gun maniac... By the way, why are you interested in Russian and German?"

"Personally, I think these are the two most militarily powerful nations, and I'm interested in everything related to them." I admitted it quite honestly.

"Okay, okay! Go already... He's put a lot of worries on me here, you know..."

"That's it, that's it! Consider that I'm already in the gym!" I said cheerfully, already closing the door behind me.

"The boy..." Katsuragi's grunt came after me.

I closed the door and exhaled wearily. It seems, lads, this time it got through...

I don't know, though...

Chapter 11. Katsuragi's lies about the death toll.

"So, Shinji" Katsuragi walked leisurely in front of a small interactive whiteboard with her hands clasped behind her back. "From now on, I will regularly conduct tactics classes with you, where we will analyze your actions in battle together and evaluate their effectiveness. It's not enough just to teach you how to shoot accurately, fight skillfully, and drive an Eva well — you still have to learn how to think. And preferably not during the fight, but before it. And, of course, it would be better if you consider these classes to be just a friendly conversation, rather than a tedious duty, so dialogue is welcome. Is that clear?"

I shifted slightly in my easy chair and nodded.

"That's wonderful," the girl smiled. "First of all, I want to ask you if you have any questions about the Third Object A? By the way, the staff pundits assigned him the code name Sakiel or Objekt A of Water. I don't really understand what the point of this is, but it doesn't really matter... So, is there anything you're interested in?"

Well, finally! Finally, something worthwhile! Naturally, I have questions about how to avoid this...

"Here's a question to start with, Misato. How could such a huge machine get to the city virtually unnoticed? Why wasn't she stopped on her way to Tokyo? Or is detonating N2 bombs right in the city limits some kind of special trick that I just don't understand?"

The captain thought for a while and answered me:

"Well, then, I'll try to tell you everything in order... So, the wise guys didn't call Sakiel the Angel of Water for nothing — he did most of the way underwater. The data obtained from various video and photo cameras allowed us to establish that he had something similar to gills, and Sakiel himself, if you might have noticed, looked somewhat like an amphibian... was. If only we had his body at our disposal, instead of a puddle of blue blood smeared over the territory of three blocks..."

"Of course, I'm terribly sorry, but it didn't work out any other way." I was slightly indignant. "That fucking Godzilla..."

"Calm down, calm down!" Katsuragi reassured me. "No one is accusing you of anything, Shinji — you've already done more than we expected."

"More than nothing?" I asked.

"Ah... eh... So you're saying, why couldn't we attack the Object A earlier?" Misato was a little alarmed.

"Yeah," I nodded sarcastically. "That's what I'm interested in."

"Yeah... Well, that's it..." Katsuragi calmed down, avoiding the unpleasant topic of the catastrophic failure of the combat operation. "To be honest, we just didn't expect something like this. Sakiel slipped unnoticed past our patrol vessels and planes and was discovered after he got to the surface...

"Wait," I was genuinely surprised. "But if my memory serves me correctly, then the "Troika" is separated from the sea by a fairly decent distance?"

"Hmm, it looks like he's cheating," Katsuragi chuckled. "Have you forgotten about the half-submerged ruins on the approach to Tokyo 3?"

Oops! And the geography has changed here, however...

"Aaa..." I said vaguely.

"Yeah," the girl mimicked me. "So the Angel calmly got out just a couple of kilometers from the city and quickly moved towards it. Units of the United Nations contingent stationed near the city were alerted, but their attack was unsuccessful — Sakiel simply incinerated a dozen combat helicopters, scattered a tank battalion and continued on his way. We tried to stop him with the help of aviation, but that didn't help either, so in the end, it was decided to drop an N2 bomb on the Object A."

"And anyway, detonate a bomb almost right next to the city..." I grumbled. "No, it's just crazy! What if civilians had been injured?"

"Don't worry, there was no threat to ordinary people — they were all evacuated in advance."

So. But there's definitely something wrong here-I can clearly sense some kind of falseness in Misato's voice. I hardly know how to lie myself, but I feel pretty good about lying in others — is this another manifestation of my introversion?..

"Evacuated, you say..." I said thoughtfully, looking past Katsuragi. For some reason, the captain was trying to hide her gaze from me...

Something doesn't add up here... There's something about this version that doesn't suit me... But just what? Evacuation, evacuation...

Stop.

What the hell kind of evacuation?! The alarm was announced right before the Object's A invasion of the city! If everyone was evacuated, then why the hell was I hanging around the city? And I wasn't the only one on the train!..

Hmm, that's funny... Shinji's memories are starting to mix with mine-curious, extremely curious... To hell with it! That's not what we're talking about right now!!!
